Course focuses on the elucidation of possible characters primarily in morphology and phytochemistry and their correct interpretation in systematics and phylogeny. Morphological and phytochemical analyses yield the characters to be compiled and discussed by the students. Background information concerns general character studies, cultural and horticultural aspects. Brief introductions to retrieving scientific information, and presentation of scientific data complete the course. Ecological (e.g. phytoalexin production, cultivation conditions) and other applied aspects (e.g. phytomedicine) are briefly addressed, so much as to give basic information for further discussion of these topics during the PP-seminar in the following semester.
