Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The aims of the excursion are the following:Familiarize the students with the most important near-natural and anthropogenic vegetation types of the submediterranean region - Quercus pubescens-dominated forestswoods, littoral vegetation, running water- and pond vegetation, pastures.
Characteristic animal species for each of the above vegetation types are presented: nesting sites of griffon vultures (Gyps fulvus), sea gull colonies (Larus cachinnans michahellis), gambusia (Gambusia affinis), tarantulas (Lycosa tarentula), black widows (Latrodectus mactans tredecimguttatus), processionary moths (Thaumetopoea pityocampa), etc.
The ecological annidation of several reptile species clearly demonstrates adaption processes. The impact of continous landuse on the natural vegetation is being taught using sheep farming as an example.
The anthropogenic influence is causing habitat reduction and an ecological imbalance in sensitive islandecosystems.
