Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course will review procedures and cases involving claims under international law against and on behalf of states and individuals (natural and legal persons). The subjects will include various problems of international dispute settlement which lawyers, counsels, advocates and diplomats are usually confronted with.
Based on hypothetical statements of facts, students will act as lawyers and counsels and prepare legal briefs in an international dispute before an arbitral body, international tribunal or the International Court of Justice.

Assessment and permitted materials

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The objective of the course is to provide students with a basic technical knowledge in writing briefs and memorials, combined with a working understanding. Special emphasis is placed on style and strategy in legal writing, as well as on substantive issues of international law.
Students will gain skills in international dispute settlement in order to successfully do an LL.M. program or start their legal careers in an international law firm or in the foreign ministry.

Examination topics

The course will be held in cooperation with lawyers and diplomats experienced in litigation. After an overview of various forms of international dispute resolution, students will prepare legal briefs.
