Aims, contents and method of the course

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
The objective of the course is to provide students with a basic technical knowledge in writing briefs and memorials, combined with a working understanding. Special emphasis is placed on style and strategy in legal writing, as well as on substantive issues of international law.
Students will gain skills in international dispute settlement in order to successfully do an LL.M. program or start their legal careers in an international law firm or in the foreign ministry.

Examination topics
The course will be held in cooperation with lawyers and diplomats experienced in litigation. After an overview of various forms of international dispute resolution, students will prepare legal briefs.

Based on hypothetical statements of facts, students will act as lawyers and counsels and prepare legal briefs in an international dispute before an arbitral body, international tribunal or the International Court of Justice. In the summer term the course will focus on a dispute before the International Court of Justice.
