Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
This lecture series deals with a general introduction to electron microscopy in life sciences, with an introduction to the techniques of scanning and transmission electron microscopy, as well as accompanying instruments, an introduction to the methods of preparation of biological samples for electron microscopy, and the application of these methods to special biological objects and current topics or projects. This lecture aims at awakening the students' interest in this wide field of biological scientific research possibilities and to show the facilities at our faculty. A guided tour through the Core Facility Cell Imaging and Ultratructure Research is possible. It should also serve as preparatory teaching and as overview for the many practical courses that are offered in our Core Facility for deepening knowledge and practical application of the special techniques.
Assessment and permitted materials
Written examination at the end of the term ( dates to be determined). According to the present situation, the exam will be held online and not in the form of a question catalogue, for which a number of points are distributed. Rather a written "Essay" in answer to 2 complex questions will be asked for, from which we can evaluate the knowledge and understanding of the matter.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
The written exam must be positively passed. For every exam individual topics will be asked for, which will be passed on to the students at 12 o'clock of the appointed date. There will be 24 hours time to write an essay of 3 - 5 A4-size pages. Until 12 o'clock the next day the essay should be sent to both of us, Dr. Reipert and myself, Dr. Weidinger as Word-document and via Email.
Examination topics
For a good understanding of the matter it is essential to be present during the lectures ,unfortunately this was not possible this year. We offer our Power-Point presentations and additional working material in form of written comments will be offered. These can also be usd for the exam.History of electron microscopy, the cell in the electron microscope, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, sample preparation methods, cryo-preparation, element -analysis with SEM(EDX), element- analysis with TEM (EELS/ESI), sample preparation for element- analysis. immunolabelling, 3D- methods for EM, model organisms.
