Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Aims:
Students are familiar with botanical-morphological terminology and its application to describing and determining of seed plants. Students know the most important vascular plant species of the central European flora including their ecological position.

Contents:
Comparative morphology and systematics of seed plants and terminological tool box for their determination. 200 important species of the Central European Flora and their ecological position.

Methods:
Introductory lecture by the course leader; subsequently, students analyse the main objects using magnifying glases or stereo microscopes (including making scientific schematic drawings), in which endeavour they are supported by the course leaders

Costs:
ca. 50 Euro

Assessment and permitted materials

In total 80 points can be earned. These are distributed among four parts as follows:
a) Drawings: 4 points
b) 12 short written tests 4 points each (3 of those can be used as void results that do not contribute to the final score, i.e., only 9 of these test contribute to the overall score): 36 points
c) Determination and analysis of an unknown plant (i.e., one that has not been covered during the course): 20 points
d) oral final exam (on all topics covered during the course): 20 points
Assessment starts on the first course day and finishes with the final oral exam. The first three assessments (a-c in the above list) are made during the course units, the fourth one (d in the above list) can be made the latest until the 20th September 2024.

Permitted material: (a), (b), and (d): none; (c) flora (book)

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Minimum requirements for a positive grade are: 41 points.

Credit key:
0-40.75 points: failed
41-50 points: sufficient
50.25-60 points: satisfactory
60.25-70 points: good
70.25-80 points: excellent
