Aims, contents and method of the course
Students understand the fundamental structure and function of lakes, streams and rivers. They recognize the importance of these ecosystems for global issues such as the hydrological cycle, carbon cycling and biodiversity. They understand why both ecosystem functions and services of lakes, streams and rivers are key to society. Students will know the basic physical, chemical and biological mechanisms underlying the global relevance of inland waters. They are able to recognize environmental problems related to inland waters and to evaluate potential solutions to these problems.
