300298 VO Fractals in Ecology (2011S)

Fractal theory plays an important role in all scientific dixciplines by enabling to analyse and understand even complex patterns and processes. This lecture block introduces the mathematical basis of fractal theory and discusses many applications in biology and ecology. Areas include a.o., growth forms, habitat structure, metabolic scaling theory and species-abundance relations. Practical examples will be analysed using a software programm.
