Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

A short history of ecology and limnology. Plants in fresh and marine waters. The freshwater ecosystem, and adaptations of aquatic plants to dominating environmental parameters. Physiology of aquatic plants (respiration, photosynthesis, nutrients, distribution, plant growth). Diversity of, and competition among water plants. Aquatic plants functioning as habitat for other organisms. Occurrence of water plants in the Danube River corridor and catchment. Herbivory. Water plants and sewage impact, bioindication, neophytes.

Assessment and permitted materials

Oral examination in the final lecture unit. Additional Dates upon agreement.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Historical basis of ecology, limnology and hydrobotany, as well as information on important aquatic and semi-aquatic species. Conveying the relationship between plants and natural environmental factors, competition effects and the relationship with human uses of water bodies. Focus on bioindication, possible climate change effects like neophytes and invasive species. Examples from real-world water management issues.

Examination topics

Lecture course with discussion blocks on specific topics. Introduction to a basic knowledge of aquatic plant species. Hand-out with essential tables and graphics.
