Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The goal of the course is to teach Masters and PhD students about different methods which can be used to prepare and perform routine electron microscopy (EM), including how to prepare semi-thin and ultrathin sections using an ultramicrotome and an introduction to the transmission electron microscope. In addition, immunolabelling and contrasting using negative staining and acrylic sections will be evaluated and compared. Finally, stereological methods that may be useful for quantification of immunogold labelling will be presented and discussed. Advanced methods for sample preparation and other label detection methods will be discussed. Students participating in this course will gain a good understanding of routine and immunological methods for transmission EM. In addition, students can gain practical experience in preparing samples for electron microscopy and also how to interpret both routine preparations for transmission electron microscopy and how to interpret results of immunolabelling experiments.
