This lecture series provides an overview of the current knowledge on microbial community composition and function in marine ecosystems and extreme habitats. The importance of microorganisms for ecosystem functioning and elemental cycles will be highlighted. For example, (i) newest insight into the biology of phototrophic marine microorganisms, (ii) bacteria running the biogeochemical nitrogen cycle, and (iii) microorganisms in hot springs and other "hostile" habitats will be discussed in detail. This lecture series will demonstrate how the application of modern molecular tools has revolutionized our perception of microbial ecology during the last decade.
