Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

In the course 'Modelling ecological systems' the students will be introduced to standard modelling techniques and how they are applied to challenges in population, interaction and community ecology. We will study process-oriented, as well as descriptive-statistical models.
The main topics will be 'growth', 'interactions', 'patterns and self-organisation' and 'networks'.

Assessment and permitted materials

written exam

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The students will be introduced to basic modelling techniques as used in ecology and related fields. The presented techniques are studied on the basis of specific ecological problems. Different approaches for a standing question are illustrated. We will be studying process-oriented models (deterministic, stochastic, discrete, continous and space-explicit), as well as statistic-descriptive models (networks, regression-based).

Examination topics

lecture, student's involvement in revisions of the lecture content
