Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course provides an overview of the classification and taxonomy of prokaryotes, and introduces basic concepts of molecular taxonomy, phylogenetic sequence analysis, and phylogenetic treeing methods. This knowledge is applied in practical exercises with online databases, web-based tools for sequence analysis and the phylogeny software package ARB. The programme ARB is a comprehensive, worldwide-used software environment for comparative sequence analysis and phylogenetic inference.

Assessment and permitted materials

Continuous assessment of course work. Cooperation and achieved results during the course, written exam.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Participants will learn how to interpret phylogenetic data and identify microorganisms by means of phylogenetic marker genes.

Examination topics

Import of sequence data from public databases, application of phylogeny software (sequence alignment, treeing calculations), methods to analyze the diversity of natural microbial communities based on phylogenetic data.
