Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Algebra of complex numbers (addition, multiplication, powers, roots; polar and cartesisian representation, Euler's formula).
Functions, continuity, limits, differentiation, curve sketching.
Basic techniques of integration (integration by parts, substitution), definite and indefinite integrals, fundamental theorem of calculus, improper integrals.
Selected topics from calculus: Partial differentiation, determination of critical points for functions of two variables. Least squares method.
First order differential equations (separable and linear, inhomogeneous differential equations of first order).
Linear differential equations of second order with constant coefficients, Modelling of dynamic processes, Euler-scheme of numerical analysis and simulation using spreadsheet programs.

Assessment and permitted materials

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

At the end of the course all students should have a command of mathematics commensurable with average Austrian high school standards. In addition, the course explores selected elements of calculus, differential equations and applied mathematics relevant to chemistry and biology.
Grading:
Written exam.
