Aims, contents and method of the course
This unit provides an overview of modern evolutionary theories. Major events in the evolution of organisms from the Praecambrian to Recent will be illustrated and macro- and microevolutionary mechanisms are discussed. This lecture will be completed by a seminar in SS 2011.
Assessment and permitted materials
Written examination (45 min.).
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Students will learn the basic principles of evolution of organisms and the biodiversity with special reference to species concepts. Additionally, current hypotheses on the origin of life and the biosphere are exemplified.
Examination topics
The contents are presented in a lecture.
