Die Vorlesung findet FR von 10 Uhr c.t. bis 12.00 Uhr im Seminarraum der Theoretischen Biologie, UZA 1, Biozentrum Althanstraße 14, 1090 Wien, 2. Ebene, 4. Spange statt. Die Kurstermine sind 07.10.2016, 14.10.2016, 21.10.2016, 28.10.2016, 04.11.2016 und 11.11.2016. BITTE BEACHTEN: 9.12. 2016 als Zusatztermin!!. Als 1. mündlichen Prüfungstermin schlage ich vor: Mo., 19.12, 10 - 12 Uhr (der Ort muss noch fixiert werden - nähere Information dazu am 9.12. in der Vorlesung).


Aims, contents and method of the course

The following topics will be clarified from a theoretical point of view and illustrated by typical examples: sine and cosine oscillations, rotating circle, phase, period, frequency, wavelength, time, Fourier series, approximating oscillations, estimating Fourier coefficients, oscillators (in particluar, the harmonic oscillator), a representation of oscillations by differential equations, resonance, reversibility vs. irreversibility, wave, phase space, predator-prey relationship, parasite-host interaction, competition, hysteresis.

The lecture should impart to advanced students basics (in particular, mathematical basics) of periodic processes to be observed in biology in large numbers
