Aims, contents and method of the course

Viruses are ubiquitous wherever potential hosts are present. They form a dynamic, highly abundant component of the microbial community. The spectrum of host-organisms includes all forms of life. The interactions of viruses with their host-species and their environment as well as their propagation and transmission cycles are topics of viral ecology.
This lecture focuses on the ecology of viruses in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems with an emphasis on different aquatic systems. Topics are the abundance and diversity of viruses, the evolution of viruses and virus-host co-evolution, the role of viruses in the aquatic carbon cycle, RNA and DNA-viruses, viral cycles, the influence of viruses on host organisms and their diversity (phages, algae-viruses as well as mammal and avian viruses). Special emphasis will be given on aquatic ecosystems as sink for viruses, viral human pathogens in aquatic ecosystems and emerging pathogens.
