Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
- Aims: Students know the breadth of biogeography, the branch of biological sciences that addresses the question, how and why biological diversity varies in space and time.Content: This lecture covers the following topics: (i) environmental setting and basic biogeographic principles, Earth history and fundamental biogeographic processes (including dispersal, immigration, speciation, extinction, changing Earth); (ii) evolutionary history of lineages and biotas (incl. reconstructing the history of lineages and of biotas); (iii) ecological biogeography (island biogeography, areography, ecogeographic rules, diversity gradients); (iv) distribution patterns, Pleistocene biogeography (with focus on the Alps)- Methods: lecture
Assessment and permitted materials
Written exam about the topics covered during the course. The exam will be done digitally (via Moodle): a document (available in several common file formats) with the questions is downloaded from Moodle; the questions are answered offline (using the course presentations provided in Moodle as well as other sources, such as the Internet; pure copy-paste is not permitted) and uploaded again to Moodle (within a single document) within the allotted time (2 hours [plus 10 mins as buffer in case of technical problems])
