Organisational meeting will be on Wed 03.10.2018 in the Seminar Room of the Theoretical Biology Department, UZA 1, Biozentrum Althanstraße 14, 1090 Wien (Ebene 2, Spange 4). Class will meet weekly thereafter in the same time (10-12:00).


Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Students will learn methods for image analysis using ImageJ, Amira, and other software, carry out projects using x-ray microtomographic (microCT) or other 3D images of biological samples and write a research report in the format of a scientific paper. Techniques will include applications of image processing and analysis software to 2D and 3D images, 3D image reconstruction and visualisation, and image measurement and analysis.
This course is not blocked, so the project work can be carried out according each student's own schedule.

Assessment and permitted materials

Based on participation (30%), project content and presentation (30%), and final report (40%).

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Students will carry out a small research project and present their results, while learning techniques and applications of 3D microscopic imaging.

Examination topics

In-class discussions, independent reading, and small-group work with instructors.

Reading list

Literature specific to each project will be chosen by the instructors and students during development of the projects.
