Aims, contents and method of the course

In applied conservation, the comprehensive knowledge of species and their biology is an important requirement to quantify the conservation relevance of human activities on habitats and their species assemblages. In the framework of this course we will give an introduction on the fauna and flora of the Vienna region. Furthermore, participants will learn the identification of species und higher taxa.

Assessment and permitted materials

Assessment of participation; short presentations on animal groups or alternatively preparation of a determination key for 5 selected species; written mid-term examination.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

You should know and recognize the presented plant species and animal groups. Moreover, you should understand the logic of a determination key and be able to use it.

Examination topics

224 species of vascular plants, characters of 14 big families.
