The phenology, appearance and importance of algal groups is described and discussed. Seasonality, annual and interannual sequences in a wide variety of fresh-water ecosystems are described. Pattern, processes and dynamics of community assembly are detailed. The concept of 'functional groups' is deduced and explained. Finally, the ecosystem is re-assembled and brought into an applied context.
