Aims, contents and method of the course

This special course offers training for identification of the free-living copepods of Europe, including freshwaters and marine animals from the Mediterranean Sea, Eastern-Atlantic and Nord Sea. Sea living copepods inhabiting neritic and oceanic zones will be shown. The course includes teaching in biology and taxonomy of copepods living in pelagic and benthic environments. It includes theory on morphology and anatomy, systematic of the group, biology and ecology, geographical distribution and economic value. The laboratory work involves observation of living animals, conservation, coloration, preparation technics and identification of calanoid, cyclopoid, harpacticoid and poecilastomatoid copepods. Sampling technics of planktonic and benthic copepods in an Austrian aquatic environment is shown.
Exkursion: Marchfeldkanal
Exam: Theory: 5 questions about theoretical aspects. Practical part: Separation and identification of the species of a water sample, calculation of the abundance.
