Aims, contents and method of the course

This special course offers training for identification of the free-living copepods of Europe, including freshwater and marine animals from the Mediterranean Sea, Eastern-Atlantic and North Sea. Marine copepods studied during the course include species inhabiting coastal, neritic and oceanic zones. The course includes teaching on biology and systematics of copepods of pelagic, benthic and groundwater environments. Introductory lectures include theory on morphology and anatomy, taxonomy and phylogeny of the group, biology and autoecology of the taxa, geographical distribution and economic value. The laboratory work involves observation of living specimens, conservation, coloration, preparation technics and identification of calanoid, cyclopoid, harpacticoid and poecilostomatoid copepods.
Exam: Theory: 3-4 questions about theoretical aspects. Practical part: Identification of 3-5 species.
