Aims, contents and method of the course

This special course offers training for identification of the free-living copepods of Europe, including freshwater and marine animals from the Mediterranean Sea, Eastern-Atlantic and North Sea. Marine copepods studied during the course include species inhabiting coastal, neritic and oceanic zones. The course includes teaching on biology and systematics of copepods of pelagic, benthic and groundwater environments. Introductory lectures include morphology and anatomy, taxonomy and phylogeny of the group, biology and autoecology of the taxa, geographical distribution and economic value. The laboratory work involves observation of living specimens, conservation, coloration, preparation technics and identification of calanoid, cyclopoid and harpacticoid copepods.
If neccessary, English can be used during lectures and laboratories.

Assessment and permitted materials

Exam (written exam): Determination of 3 - 5 species (60%), questions about biology of copepods (30%). Active participation on the course (10%).

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

This course offers the possibility to learn the biology of European copepods. At the end of the course, the participants will be qualified for species identification.
