Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
This special course offers training for identification of European rotifers, including theoretical aspects on morphology and anatomy, biology and ecology, taxonomy, phylogeny and economic value of the group. Species distribution includes continental waterbodies, semiterrestric habitats and marine coastal waters of Europe. The laboratory work includes observation of living animals, narcotizing, preparation technics, mastax analyse and identification of Monogononta and Bdelloidea.
Assessment and permitted materials
Exam (written exam): Determination of the species present in a water sample and in a permanent slide (70%), questions about the biology of rotifers and attendance of the excursion (30%).
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
This course offers the possibility to learn the biology of rotifers. It includes both freshwater, marine and semiterrestrial species inhabiting wet soils and mosses of Europe. At the end of the course, the participants will be qualified for species identification.
Examination topics
Each unit includes a theorical introduction to the biology of the group and a laboratory part dedicated to learn practical methods of slide preparation of rotifers and taxonomy of the species.
