Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course examines the physical and biological structures of an riparian ecosystem and their corresponding ecosystem scale functions. The main focus of this class is on an integrated view of the aquatic and terrestrial components of this system.

Assessment and permitted materials

Students have to plan and carry out several smaller experiment and conduct analytical work in the laboratory. The contribute to the development of a conceptual model of decomposition processes. They will present their work orally and in written form at the end of the class.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Successful participants will be able to identify major components of the structure of riparian ecosystems and to identify the controls of ecosystem processes in the aquatic and terrestrial compartments. They are able to analyze and integrate this information in simple conceptual models.

Examination topics

We will use a variety of up-to date methods in ecosystem ecology, ranging from ecosystem scale gas-exchange measurements, chemical analysis to isotope methods and mathematical modelling.
