Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

It is typically hiuman to engage in individualized relationships with companion animals; human-animal relations increase in importance in modern societies. It will be discussed on the base of evolutionary history and biological factors, why this is so and why it is possible to engage in social relationships with animals. The focus is on the basic mechanisms rather than the applzied side, such as animals in therapy.

Assessment and permitted materials

Final exam in for of a seminar where students present a summary of the paper they read and have to discuss the topical contents of the course.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

To reach an understanding of the social nature of human-animal companionship, also as a base for the building emotionally reasonable relationships with animals and as a base for ethics. Presenting the relevant facts from comparative organismic biology.

Examination topics

Classical lecturing based on ppt. Discussing topics with the students. Each student will read and digest one relevant paper from the scientific literature.
