Aims, contents and method of the course
The principles of conservation of momentum, energy, and mass will be introduced in the context of biological systems. Emphasis will be placed on diffusion and convection transport of energy and mass as affected by fluid mechanics. Analytical and numerical examples will be presented relating to biological organs, organisms and their environments. The objective is to gain physical understanding of these systems through the analysis of experimental data and the construction of simple mathematical models amenable to analytical, numerical or statistical formulations and solutions.
