Aims, contents and method of the course
The class will draw upon the primary literature and is designed to promote open and active discussion in key areas of environmental science that require a better understanding of microbial ecology. Areas of coverage include: 1. The Systems of Science (including discussion of ethics, peer review, training, reward systems, and the role of interdisciplinary research), 2. The Process of Inquiry (including discussion of the role of natural history in contemporary microbial ecology and the basis for formulating hypotheses), and 3. Emerging Questions and Grand Challenges in Microbial Ecology.
