Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

a. Aims: Understanding of the underlying concepts and methods of bioinformatics,
b. Content: The lecture aims at giving a broad overview about bioinformatics methods and applications from the areas of exact string matching, pairwise sequence alignment algorithms, multiple sequence alignment methods, sequence database searching, a short primer about probability on sequences, hidden Markov models (HMMs), phylogenetic tree reconstruction, high throughput sequencing methods, genome assembly, read mapping, and genome analysis.
c. Methods: Lectures, graded exercises (Moodle), exercise discussions, complementary homework (as preparation for the tests),
REMARK: The initial meeting (Vorbesprechung with assignment places) and the lecture on this first date will take place online.

Assessment and permitted materials

a. Type of assessment: During the course there are two written tests (multiple choice and open questions) which count 30% each and cover about half the topics of the course each, and there are 4 homework assignments, of which the solutions have to be submitted and count 10% each.
b. Permitted material: There is no materal allowed during the written tests (this includes mobile phones, smartphones, handheld calculators, etc).

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

a. Minimum requirements: Attendance at the initial meeting (Vorbesprechung) at the first session (possibly online)! Attendance during the course (this will be checked in the first lecture and during the tests and exercise discussions), To pass the course one has to obtain at least 50% of the possible weighted sum of points. The obtained percentage of the points determines the actual grade.
b. Assessment criteria: The following obtained percentages correspond to the following grades:
>=87.5%: grade 1 (very good)
<87.5%: grade 2 (good)
<75.0%: grade 3 (satisfactory)
<62.5%: grade 4 (sufficient)
<50.0%: grade 5 (insufficient)

Examination topics

Relevant is all content of the lectures, the handouts, the exercises, the exercise discussions and the complementary homework.

Reading list

A list of possible textbooks will be presented in the first lecture. Additional references are given throughout the lectures.
