Course requirements and admission criteria:
1.Attendance at the introductory meeting for the course (‘Vorbesprechung’)
2. Master’s students in A877 'Genetics und Developmental Biology' and A066834 Molecular Biology will be considered preferentially for a place in the course
3. Successful completion of the lecture series VO301557 ‘Principles of Genetics’ needed.
4. Additional requirements for students who have not completed their bachelor's degree in the bachelor's program Biologie at the University of Vienna in the areas of BMG or BMB: External students who got practical courses (UE) as requirement by the admission to the Master´s program have to complete them in advance (bringa copy of your admission letter and a current transcript to the preliminary meeting).


Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

2 week advanced course for the genetic model system C. elegans, covering classical forward and reverse genetics, as well as more recent methods of targeted genome editing. Topics:
- Introduction to C. elegans as an experimental model
- Classical forward genetics incl. genetic mapping and epistasis
- Reverse genetics (RNAi)
- Targeted genome manipulation by homologous recombination
- Cellular analysis by immunofluorescence microscopy
- Seminars on current C. elegans research at the Vienna Biocenter campus

A basic understanding of genetics is essential for this course. Completion of the following introductory lecture series is therefore highly recommended: 301557 VO Principles in Genetics and Developmental Biology (WS).

Assessment and permitted materials

Grading is based on class participation including carrying out course experiments and written protocol (~20 pages). There will be no final exam. Instead students are each responsible for one of the course experiments.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Attendance mandatory (taking time off during the course only possible with the prior agreement of the instructors and if compatible with ongoing experiments). Grading is as follows: Class participation: 16 (40%) points; written protocol: 16 points (40%); supervision of course experiment: 8 points (20%). Each part must be completed successfully for a passing grade.
Grading scheme:
36-40 points: very good (1)
31-35 points: good (2)
26-30 points: satisfactory (3)
20-25 points: sufficient (4)
<19 points: insufficient (5)

Examination topics

There will be no final exam. Instead students will be responsible in pairs for one of the course experiments. Key here is the successful orientation of the class for the day’s experiments, the collection of results and their interpretation. Written protocols should include a brief introduction to each experiment, a description of methods and results as well as a discussion of results obtained (if any). Evaluation of course participation includes active participation in class discussion and carrying out experiments.
