Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
This journal club is a wonderful opportunity to stay abreast of new topics and publications in stem cell biology -- an exciting field that attracts a lot of interest and research funding. In the pre-discussion, students will be briefly introduced to the field and a number of recent research papers grouped around some core themes (typically, <= 12 months of age), and then sign up for the publication that they would like to present. Topics vary for each term, and range from stem cells in "simple" animal or plant systems to biomedical applications and organoids. For the presentation, students are expected to place the publication in the context of the respective field, and discuss its major findings, and how they align with the state of the field. The discussion typically also includes an assessment of major strengths and weaknesses of the paper.Presentations are held in English, and every presentation will also receive constructive feedback from peers and the organiser to improve presentation skills of all presenters.
Assessment and permitted materials
Compulsory attendance; the evaluation consists of different performances: quality and completeness of the seminar presentation, active participation in the scientific discussion of the presented publications, written records (the percentage of the subgrades will be announced by the course leader); each of the subgrades must have a positive evaluation.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
For the assessment of the performance, the following criteria are used:
Attendance and Presentation of a topic that is largely correct (grade: 4)
Plausible structure of the presentation; ability to select subtopics of particular relevance; ability to answer selected questions to the presentation (grade: 3)
Ability to weigh different arguments; constructive participation in the scientific and conceptional discussion of presentations made by the other participants (grade: 2)
Ability to critically evaluate the arguments presented in a publication; ability to think conceptually, e.g. by referring to controversies or follow-up work; own ideas for addressing open questions (grade: 1)
