Aims, contents and method of the course

Master projects serve to develop students’ abilities to read and analyze primary literature, identify knowledge gaps, formulate research goals and working hypothesis, choose adequate methods, develop working plan, analyze and critically interpret empirical observations, etc when addressing a specific research question. The course will help students prepare for the Master project, identify knowledge gaps, formulate working hypothesis, prepare a solid plan for the project and get feedback, get familiar with important concepts of research data management, good scientific practice, ethical conduct of research; develop skills of the experimental design, digital imaging and basic skills for data presentation. Students will develop a proposal for the Master project and get feedback.
The course is aimed at Master-level students in the area of basic biomedical research (molecular biology, microbiology, and the like) preparing to start a Master project in the near future or who just started with the project. The course is strongly recommended for the students of MMB, MGE and MMEI programs starting their Master project in the labs outside of Vienna BioCenter campus.

Assessment and permitted materials

series of on-site seminars, written assignments (submitted via course Moodle page) and student presentations.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Attendance of at least 80% of the seminars is required as a prerequisite for completion of the course. 1 (Sehr Gut): 90-100%; 2 (Gut): 75-89.99%; 3 (Befriedigend): 60-74.99%; 4 (Genügend): 50-59.99%; 5 (Nicht genügend): <50%.
