Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The lecture focuses on physico-chemical foundations of molecular biology and covers the following topics: nature and definition of thermodynamic systems; laws of thermodynamics; thermodynamic state functions; concepts of heat, work, enthalpy, entropy and free energy; chemical potential and chemical equilibrium; chemical kinetics and transition states; diffusion; elements of polymer physics. Theoretical concepts will be discussed and illustrated using biological phenomena such as enzymatic catalysis or non-covalent protein interactions as examples. The lecture will also include exercises in which quantitative physical chemistry problems will be solved.

Assessment and permitted materials

Written exam (75%) + 4 take-home exercises in the course of the semester (25%).

End grade = 75% x Exam + 25% x Exercises

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Passing grade is obtained with 50% or more total points.

0-49,99% Grade: 5
50 - 59,99% Grade: 4
60 - 74,99% Grade: 3
75 - 89,99% Grade: 2
90 - 100% Grade: 1

Examination topics

Exam material consists of written exercises which are similar in content and difficulty to the 4 take-home exercises solved during the course.
