As discussed on our pre-meeting, Lectures Current and advanced topics in structural biology will be in block

18. - 22. December at VBC6.

On Monday 18th we will meet in Computer room @ VBC5 at 13:50 and then jointly attend an extracurricular talk Modern Concepts Wolfgang Peti in Max Perutz Labs main building – seminar room 1 / 2; Dr. Bohrgasse 9, 1030 Wien on level 6, and then return to the Computer room @ VBC5 for lectures.

Tuesday - Friday (we will discuss the detailed day-to-day plans as we go on):
13h onwards in Seminar room @VBC5

Due to the availability of rooms, we will start:
- Tuesday 19th Dec at 15h
- Wednesday 20th Dec at 13h
- Thu-Fri at 14h

Aims, contents and method of the course

This in-depth course covering will cover advanced topics of Macromolecular crystallography and Molecular Structural Biology, and is recommended for students that have already attended the lessons on Macromolecular Crystallography and/or Biophysical method for biological macromolecules (Analytical chemistry II).

The following topics will be covered:

* Electron Transmission Microscopy
* Use of Soft X-rays in Macromolecular Crystallography
* Neutron Diffraction
* Small angle X-ray scattering for macromolecules
* Radiation damage and its applications
* The frontiers: Kinetic crystallography and X-ray Free Electron Laser
* Membrane protein structural biology

Assessment and permitted materials

Oral or written exam, depending on the number of students.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Attendance and active participation during the lecture course, >60% correct answers of exam for passing grade.
100-90%: excellent (1)
89-80%: good (2)
79-70%: satisfactory (3)
69-60%: sufficient (4)
< 59%: insufficient (5)
