Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The participants of this course get a comprehensive overview of fundamental concepts in microbiome science. Addressed topics will include a review of key prokaryotic features, adaptations and diversity; how microbes impact major global processes; microbial energy metabolisms, physiology and growth; microbial genome biology; environmental sensing and regulation at the levels of gene transcription, protein synthesis and protein activity modulation; microbial evolution, symbioses, and host-microbe interactions. This knowledge is conveyed in lectures and reinforced through topic-specific exercises.

Assessment and permitted materials

Active participation in the regular course exercises and successful completion of written exams held after each topic area. Exercises are in open book format, whereas no auxiliary resources are permitted in exams.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Course attendants must complete the topic-specific exercises. Collective exams after each topic area are graded (at least 50% of the max. points must be achieved and grades are based on the number of points achieved). Final course grades are based on the participation in the exercises and the average of the collective exams grades.

Examination topics

Content of the course lectures and course exercises.
