Aims, contents and method of the course

Sustainability at the University and at the workplace How to calculate CO2 footprints: Explanation of the scopes and other methods how to calculate. Using the tool Climcalc we we calculate a university footprint and discuss how to acquire missing datasets Impact of our CO2 footprint on the global output. Using the EN-Roads tool (MIT) we will test the impact of research on the global temperature goals (IPCC) and see how we can influence this. In addition, the big impact sectors will be discussed. Examples of the CO2 footprint from university and research will be discussed and divided in 4 big topics. Mobility, energy, products and waste. Each of the four will be discussed in detail and examples from the research labs will be given. Tools like surveys, datasystems to acquire data will be discussed and presented. We will do a case study of plastic gloves and see how we can calculate the impact for a student practical course.

Assessment and permitted materials

-1/3 participation-1/3 group exercises and assignment-1/3 exam- Good overview of the Sustainability goals- Understanding of the role of universities in becoming CO2 neutral- Knowledge about how to do a CO2 calculation and know what is comprissed- Understanding how mobility, energy and products influence our CO2 footprint- Impact of single use plastics in research and waste in general- Tools available to acquire and analyze our CO2 footprint

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Presentations of the topic with the use of online tools like Climcalc, En-roads to strengthen the message Small Group and Group Discussions to stimulate the interactions Group presentation of university examples

Examination topics

- Slides with presentations for each hour- 5-10 case studies of universities will be provided- (students will acquire more case studies and these will be shared among students)- Group presentations will be share- Moodle activity (SCORM package)
