In the first part, spectroscopic methods relevant for pharmaceutical analytics are presented, the second part deals with corresponding electrochemical methods. Both parts focus on techniques suitable for the analysis of classical (small molecule) drug compounds.
Aim: Acquiring basic knowledge regarding spectroscopic and electrochemical analytical methods; applications focusing on pharmaceutical analytics (proof of identity, proof of purity, quantitative determinations), synthesis and structural elucidation)
Contents: Basic principles of spectroscopic methods, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, infrared-spectroscopy, atomic absorption spectroscopy, atomic emission spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, X-ray structure analysis, NMR spectroscopy (1H, 13C); for each method: theoretical background, instrumentation, applications, scope and limitations.
Basic principles of electrochemical methods, potentiometry und potentiometric titrations, voltammetry, polarography, amperometry, coulometry; for each method: instrumentation, applications, scope and limitations.
Preconditions: successful completion of courses of the first study section; examinations on lectures from the second study section (3rd and 4th semester) can be done anyway (cf. Studienplan).
Mode of examination: written examination
