Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

development of tumors, mechanisms of the most important classes of cytostatic agents, molecular basis for the development of specific mechanisms of resistance (overexpression of DNA-rapair enzymes, mutations of target proteins, overexpression or lack of enzymes responsible for metabolism/activation of cytostatic drugs, decreased influx); resistance against modulators of signal transduction pathways (kinase inhibitors, farnesyl transferase inhibitors); telomerase inhibitors, inhibition of angiogenesis, immunetherapy and genetherapeutic approaches; mechansims responsible for development of multiresistance, failures in apoptose pathways, overexpression of efflux proteins; structure and function of P-glycoprotein, substrates and inhibitors of efflux proteins, development of new modulators of multidrug resistance; analogous proteins in bacteria and fungi.

Assessment and permitted materials

Oral exam

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The lecture gives an overview on the mechanisms responsible for development of drug resistance in tumor therapy. Both specific mechanisms as well as the molecular basis oo multiresistance is discussed. Additionally, the development of drugs acting on resistant tumors or being able to modulate drug resistance is presented.
