Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The pharmaceutical industry has been criticized for its recent lack of innovation. However, it has produced impressive breakthroughs such as, insulin, first in class vaccines, antihistamines, antibiotics, hormone, retroviral and cancer therapies that have significantly impacted our society. Furthermore, rapid advances in technology, infrastructure and manufacturing processes have resulted due to advancing research and development needs throughout the evolving process of designing new therapies. From this perspective, what exactly does lack of innovation mean? On the surface the need to ‘be innovative’ seems obvious. However, the process of generating ideas, finding novel solutions to problems, and meeting unarticulated needs by introducing disruptive technologies, and services to the market is extremely challenging and often results in failure.

Assessment and permitted materials

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

This course will introduce the concept of innovation and disruptive technology as well as review exemplary innovators in health care and other industries. In addition, we will interactively experience the process of innovation in the context of a project related to pharmaceutical science that will provide a framework to explore the unique leadership competencies required to guide and shape creative teams and inspire the imagination needed to recognize a good idea and transform it into a useful or even disruptive technology.
