Aims, contents and method of the course

Cellular structures and their functions.
Structure of nerve and muscle cells, membrane potential, generation and conduction of action potentials, mechanisms of contraction and the relaxation.
Localisation and functional organisation of the heart and the circulatory system, electrical and mechanical functions of the heart, regulation of cardiac functions, puls, blood pressure, regulation of the circulatory system.
Structure of the respiratory system, respiration and its regulation, gas transport between lung and tissues.
Localisation, structure and function of the kidney.
Cellular and plasmatic components of blood and their function.
Structure and function of the gastrointestinal tract including liver and pancreas, regulation of gastrointestinal functions, digestion and absorption of carbhydrates, proteins and lipids.
Hormonal regultion of growth, metabolism, function of gonades and reproduction, Ca-homeostasis, stress.
Organization and function of the nervous system and snsory organs.

Assessment and permitted materials

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

It is the aim of this lecture to teach the students the structure and function of cells, organs and organ systems. Additionally they should become familiar with medical terminology.
