Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This class will discuss the most important issues of public international law on a selective basis. Ample time will be devoted to legal topics which are central to understanding the characteristics of international law: treaties, custom, general principles, resolutions of international organizations; the relationship between international law and national legal systems; problems of statehood like state succession, jurisdiction, nationality and diplomatic protection; principles of relations between subjects of international law, in particular, the use of force and its limitation; state responsibility issues.
The course will be based on discussing case excerpts which have to be read and studied by the students in advance.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Erwerb von Kenntnissen im Bereich des Völkerrechts, dessen Beziehung zum innerstaatlichen Recht sowie dessen Bedeutung in den internationalen Beziehungen.

Examination topics

Diskussion und Erarbeitung aktueller völkerrechtlicher Probleme entsprechend der spezifischen Form der Lehrveranstaltung.
