Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Content: Regulations and use of the relevant literature (Austrian Pharmacopoeia, Pharmacopoeia Europea), structure of medical prescriptions, regulations for magistral formulae. Price calculation according to the 'Austrian Arzneitaxe'. Explanation of the small-scale manual preparation of medical prescriptions in public or hospital pharmacies. Physico-chemical background of formulations and their compounds: powders and capsules, solutions, dispersions, emulsions, maceratae, infusae, decoctae, suppositories, eye drops, ointments and homeopathic formulations. Detection of possible incompatibilities on prescriptions. The model magistral formulations to be prepared during the practical course on magistral formulations will be explained in the context of the lecture.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Aim of the lecture: Students should acquire the theoretical background to successfully prepare magistral medical prescriptions. The lecture serves to provide basic knowledge on magistral formulations and students should be able to correctly apply appropriate working protocols to produce state of the art products. This includes knowledge of the deployed compounds and their incompatibilities in order to independently correct inappropriate magistral prescriptions.

Examination topics

Contents of the lecture (power point presentation). The exam includes one model magistral medical prescription for theoretical analysis und discussion (including all required calculations, e.g. regarding allowed dosage, and price calculations) as well as two further questions to be answered orally.
