Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The course explores the various thinking, practices, and claims for development over the years to develop a systematic understanding of the socio-economic contexts of hunger and poverty in developing countries.

Assessment and permitted materials

The final course grade shall be accounted for as follows:
attendance, 20%;
participation, 30%;
class presentation, 10%; and
term paper, 40%

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Understand the economic, social, political and other contexts of hunger and poverty in developing countries;

Appreciate the role of nutrition as a foundation for development; and

Stimulate critical thinking on development policy and practice.

Examination topics

This is a readings course, and will be taught in English. Materials for obligatory reading will be assigned ahead of class. Students are encouraged to attend class regularly and to actively participate in class discussions. Each student shall write and submit a term paper (of between 10-12 pages) in partial fulfillment of course requirements. Each student shall submit a one-page outline of his/her planned paper and make a brief presentation of the subject matter of the term paper.

Reading list

Mostly journal paper. Reading list will be provided. Readings may be assigned from outside the reading list.
