Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The course is based on the methods from the exercises Introduction to Laboratory Practice and the Practice of Human Nutrition I, as well as on the experiences from the Chemical exercises for nutritional scientists and the theoretical knowledge from the VO Biochemistry and VO Genetics and Molecular Biology. These contents are assumed to be known according to the curriculum of the bachelor program Nutritional Sciences (version 2013).
The aim is to gain knowledge of some standard methods and working techniques, which are specifically used in the biochemical laboratory. In addition, the course should provide the opportunity to acquire further experience in how data are produced and evaluated, including interpretation of results, sources of error, random and systematic errors, and their characteristics.
The four laboratory sessions will take place in two parts: In the morning, there is an introductory session consisting of three presentations (2-3 person teams depending on course size) including discussion on the topics and methods of the day plus a short supplementary presentation by the responsible lecturer. In the afternoon, small groups (5-7 persons) work on the examples together.

Assessment and permitted materials

The grading consists of presentation, work performed in the laboratory, protocol and the final examination (multiple choice).

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

To pass the course, an overall performance of at least 60% has to be reached.

[80-90) %: Gut
≥ 90 %: Sehr gut
