Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
active participation in the course (2x absence with valid excuse permitted),
Oral exam:
What you should know:
1) Basic structures of tissue/organ: identify them, know the scientific terms and find them for yourself in the microscopic sample
2) Organ: be able to characterize overall and detailed structure
3) Cells: name and characterize the different types of cells in a tissue/organ
4) Cells-tissue-organ: structural/functional relations
5) Ultrastructure: cell-organelles/intracellular structures: structural/functional relations (examples discussed in the course)

Due to the current Covid-situation, we decided to plan this histology course once again as online-learning event. Main reason is, that the microscope is used by several persons (e.g. when controlling if you really have found the correct structure in the sample) and thus is a main player transmitting infections (ocular!). In case of improving Covid-situation (3G sufficient) we are able to switch into onsite-mode. The decision will be made and communicated before Christmas 2021.
1) For the time slots of the online meetings (held via webex), see the published schedule.
You´ll find information on how to access the online meetings in a Moodle-course “Übungen zur Zytologie und Histologie” (see below).
Your participation in the meetings will be checked. You are allowed to skip two meetings maximum; contents of missed units have to be learned on one´s own.2) A Moodle-course “Übungen zur Zytologie und Histologie” with all the information you need will be made public before Christmas.3) Each unit of the course will consist of a PowerPoint presentation focussing on theoretical knowledge and of a “practical part” where we will use virtual microscopy. The virtual microscope of the Medical University of Vienna (https://m3e.meduniwien.ac.at/vm/ ) contains all samples, which are topic of the histology course for nutritional scientists.4) In the last unit of this course, you usually (onsite learning) are free to have a look at all the slides you want to see once again. We have to modify this “free practical event” in the distance mode: Please have a thorough look at the samples beforehand on your own via virtual microscopy, mark down everything you are not sure about and pose your questions in the last online-unit of this practical course.5) In addition to your active participation in our online meetings, you´ll have to pass a final exam. These exams will take place as oral digital exams. Dates from which you can choose will be published at the beginning of January.Topic:
The focus of the practical course „Histology and Cytology “ is on the structure/function relationship of tissues and organ systems – most relevant for students of nutritional sciences: digestive tract + excretory system.
You will study histological slides via virtual microscopy; you will learn to diagnose the tissue/organ and to detect relevant structures within. The theoretical background will be presented via PowerPoint lectures in online sessions.
