Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
The seminar on Nutritional Epidemiology is intended to discuss recent topics in nutritional epidemiology including the design of epidemiological studies associated to nutrition related issues, the evaluation and interpretation of results from epidemiological studies including statistical methodology, modern aspects of epigenetics, and the discussion of ongoing and recent large nutritional epidemiological studies.
Assessment and permitted materials
Grades for the seminar are based on the abstract (10%), the scientific background of the presentation (50%), the style and format of the presentation (20%), the discussion (10%) and the performance as chair of the seminar (10%). The presence of all participants for all scheduled seminars is compulsory.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
- to understand the methodological background of epidemiological studies and their impact on study outcome and interpretation
- to be able to critically evaluate epidemiological studies
- to understand conceptual flaws from epidemiological studies
- to be able to design epidemiological studies with focus on nutrition assessment and disease outcome
- to be able to present scientific data and to contribute critically to scientific discussions including moderation of scientific discussions

Examination topics
The seminar is intended for advanced students and will be held entirely in English. Presentations, discussions, and all administrative issues of the seminar have to be in English.
Each participant has to prepare a scientific presentation of a topic related to the learning outcomes of the seminar including an abstract with all references used (maximum 600 words excluding references), an oral presentation of 25 minutes supported by PowerPoint slides, and a 20 min discussion of the presented topic with all seminar participants. In addition, the participants have to chair the seminar after the seminar of their presentation. Therefore, each paper has to be available one week prior to the presentation to enable chairs and participants to get prepared for the seminar and the discussion.
The abstracts and presentations will be made available online on a password protected section of the homepage of the Emerging Focus Nutrigenomics (web site to be announced). Access details will be submitted on the first day of the seminar.
