Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The students will learn the most important fundamental principles in general and inorganic chemistry. Basic knowledge regarding the periodic table and the main groups, chemical bonding, as well as the relationship between chemical formula, structure and properties. In addition, the quantitative aspects of chemistry will be practiced in the chemical calculations course. Knowledge in the following areas will be attained: thermochemistry, electrochemistry, phase diagrams, solutions, and chemical equilibrium. Atomic structure, periodic table, names of elements and ions, mol concept, chemical equations, stoichiometry, chemical reactions, empirical formulas, solutions, acid-bases, concentration units, Bohr Atom Model, electronic configuration of atoms and ions, ionic bonds, Lewis structures, polarity of bonds, VSEPR Theory, valence bond theory, hybridization, molecular orbital theory, reaction enthalpy, thermodynamics, states of matter, phase diagrams, thermodynamics of solvatisation, boiling point elevation, freezing point depression, osmosis, Arrhenius, Bronsted-Lowry and Lewis acid base theories, pH scale, buffers, titration, electrochemistry, and redox reactions.

Assessment and permitted materials

One Final Single Choice Exam consisting of 43 questions will determine the grade. 60% is necessary to pass the course. 100-90% = 1; 89-80% = 2; 79-70% = 3; 69-60% = 4; 59-0% = 5.
