Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Reflection upon topics that are relevant to the craft of the translator/interpreter, i.e. the notion of fidelity, what makes a good translation, the notion of equivalence, text types, the notion of text quality, amongst others.

Assessment and permitted materials

- Short essays/summaries/reviews;
- Oral presentations;
- Participation on ZTW Moodle;
- Attendance, punctuality and class participation.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

- Expand theoretical knowledge about reading, writing and interpretation practices in general (including translation);
- Improve writing/translation and presentation techniques;
- Make the terminology and style of scientific texts of our area more familiar;
- Improve general knowledge of Portuguese.

Examination topics

We will read a number of scientific and literary texts both in German and Portuguese (as well as other foreign languages) and then write critical essays, summaries and reviews of these texts. Students will be required to prepare a few oral presentations as well. Intense debate of the subjects involved in these texts.
