Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
Students will learn to understand and analyze oral texts. Work in class will be both intralingual (English) and interlingual (English - German). To allow for better comprehension, some of the first texts will be German. Students will practice listening and understanding texts and will be expected to present their own texts and summarize oral texts. They will also be briefly introduced to the technique of taking notes. The course will offer students a first idea what interpreting is all about.
Assessment and permitted materials
Course assessment: Regular attendance is required. Students will be expected to actively participate in class and to hand in all assignments. On-going assessment of student performance throughout the course.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
At the end of this course students should have mastered the basic skills for understanding and repeating oral texts. They should be able to understand and analyse texts and produce coherent texts on their own. Their self-reflection and speed of reaction will be enhanced.
Examination topics
Students will be asked to analyse oral texts without notes (in summary as well as in detail), produce bilingual terminology (depending on the topics dealt with), re-enact dialogues, write down oral texts listened to, etc. Group work will be an essential part of the course, allowing for all students to be involved and to receive sufficient feedback.
